PAY ME note surrounded by marked-up proofs, a pen tablet, color swatches and an overdue invoice

The deposit is not a loyalty test

Asking for a payment milestone should not require an emotional origin story.

A deposit request can make a freelancer sound as though they are asking to borrow the client's car.

There is a long introduction. An apology appears. Someone mentions trust. By the time the payment link arrives, both parties have survived a small relationship workshop.

State the payment arrangement alongside the scope and schedule. Explain which milestone reserves the work and which milestones follow. The exact arrangement depends on the project and agreement; the useful part is that neither side has to guess.

If a client's purchasing process cannot accommodate your proposal, discuss an alternative before starting. Find out who can approve it. Being flexible about a process is different from quietly accepting a process nobody has described.

Keep payment language consistent across the proposal and invoice. Do not offer three different versions because each document was written at a different stage of your confidence.

You are discussing how the engagement operates. The client does not need proof that you were a responsible child, and you do not need to deliver a heartfelt speech about rent.
