ASAP has been promoted to project manager

Nobody knows the deadline, but everyone agrees it is aggressively soon.

ASAP arrives in the subject line and sits at the head of the table. It has brought no dates.

A request can be important without requiring an immediate interruption. Ask when the work will be used and what depends on it. An event tomorrow is a different problem from someone wanting to review a thought before their next meeting.

Then compare that timing with the work already agreed. If the new request takes priority, name what moves. A schedule cannot absorb another afternoon simply because the email contains an exclamation mark.

Offer a realistic first step. Perhaps a rough version can answer the urgent question while the finished piece follows later. Say what that rough version will and will not include so it does not quietly become a production file.

Confirm the decision in writing. Everybody should be able to point to the same date.

ASAP may dislike the paperwork. Its leadership style depends heavily on not being pinned down.

About this dispatch
